Tentacles, An Uncomfortable Amount of Them

I bought that new Futurama movie, The Beast With A Billion Backs. I kind of forgot it was out until I went to the store to buy Beck's new CD (which is good, by the by) and saw it sitting next to it.

It's not great. It's not a pile of garbage, either, but the writers tried a little too hard to run with too many balls at once. The main story (the tentacle one) is the most interesting, but it's dragged down by subplot after subplot, none of which are very gripping compared to thousands of tentacles invading from another universe.

David Cross is very good as the monster, and the animation is of course excellent. The most enjoyment comes from just letting your eyeballs drink in the visual feast and the relentless series of jokes buried in the background.

Compared to Bender's Big Score (which was about a 7), this is a bit of a letdown, but movies are very much different than TV, and there will be missteps. It's hard to hate it, because of how endearing the characters are, and they still have two more movies to make up for it.

So buy it, I guess, even if just for the extras, which are pretty good.
